Overview & Challenge

A regional healthcare system with over 40 clinics and specialty practices approached PC Consulting to modernize their patient experience and clinical workflows. Their existing infrastructure was a patchwork of paper-based records, legacy EMR systems that didn't communicate with each other, and manual appointment reminder processes that relied on staff making individual phone calls.

The consequences were significant: missed appointments were costing the network millions annually, medication errors from incomplete records put patients at risk, and the check-in process averaged 15 minutes of redundant paperwork per visit. Providers spent more time navigating clunky interfaces than engaging with patients. The organization needed a unified, HIPAA-compliant platform that would work seamlessly across all facilities while providing patients with a modern mobile experience that would actually drive engagement and adoption.

Beyond the technical challenges, the system needed to achieve EHR interoperability with existing hospital systems via HL7 FHIR standards, integrate with insurance verification services for real-time eligibility checks, and support video telehealth visits for follow-ups and minor consultations — all while maintaining the strict security and compliance requirements that healthcare demands.

Solution

Our team built a cloud-native EMR platform with a .NET Core backend and Angular frontend optimized for clinical workflows. The provider-facing application featured intuitive charting, order management, lab result integration, and a unified patient timeline that aggregated data from all connected systems. We implemented HL7 FHIR-based integration adapters to synchronize patient records across the network's existing hospital EHR systems, eliminating duplicate data entry and ensuring providers always had complete patient context.

The patient-facing mobile app, built with React Native for iOS and Android, became the centerpiece of the engagement strategy. Patients could schedule appointments with smart availability matching that considered provider specialties, location preferences, and insurance compatibility. The app featured video telehealth powered by WebRTC for follow-up visits and minor consultations, medication lists with automated refill reminders, secure messaging with their care team, and digital intake forms that eliminated clipboard paperwork entirely.

We integrated Twilio for a multi-channel appointment reminder system — automated voice calls, SMS messages, and push notifications — with customizable reminder schedules and two-way confirmation. Patients could confirm, reschedule, or cancel directly from the reminder. The platform also included real-time insurance verification, reducing claim denials and front-desk friction. The entire system was deployed on Azure with HIPAA-compliant infrastructure, encrypted data at rest and in transit, comprehensive audit logging, and role-based access controls.

Within the first year of deployment, the platform onboarded over 150,000 patients across the network's 40+ locations. The automated voice and SMS reminder system reduced no-show rates by 40%, recovering significant lost revenue. Digital intake forms and insurance pre-verification cut average check-in times from 15 minutes to under 6 minutes, improving both patient satisfaction and clinic throughput. The mobile app achieved a 4.8/5 rating on both app stores, with patients particularly praising the video visit and medication management features.

Client Testimonial

"PC Consulting delivered exactly what we needed — a system that our providers actually want to use and a patient app that drives real engagement. The reduction in no-shows alone justified the investment, but the improvements in clinical workflow efficiency and patient satisfaction have transformed how we deliver care. The Twilio-powered reminder system and video visit capabilities were game-changers for our rural patients who previously had to drive hours for follow-up appointments."
