Overview & Challenge

The cannabis industry faces unique regulatory constraints that make traditional eCommerce approaches impossible. State-by-state compliance requirements mean products legal in one jurisdiction may be prohibited in another. Age verification must be ironclad. Seed-to-sale tracking systems like Metrc require real-time integration to maintain compliance. Traditional payment processing is largely unavailable — major credit card networks won't process cannabis transactions — forcing the industry to find alternative payment solutions.

Our client, a cannabis holding company operating across multiple states, needed a unified marketplace that could onboard licensed dispensaries, sync inventory across different point-of-sale systems (Dutchie, Treez, Flowhub), display compliant product listings with lab results and certificates of analysis (COAs), manage delivery zones and pickup orders, and handle payments through compliant channels — all while maintaining a consumer experience that felt as polished as any mainstream eCommerce platform.

Solution

We built a multi-tenant marketplace platform with a robust vendor onboarding pipeline that included license verification against state databases, automated compliance document collection, and configurable rules engines for each jurisdiction's specific requirements. The platform featured real-time inventory synchronization with popular cannabis POS systems, ensuring product availability was always accurate and seed-to-sale tracking was maintained through Metrc API integration.

Product listings were designed for compliance — each product displayed strain information, THC/CBD percentages, lab testing results, and downloadable COAs. An age-gate verification system using ID scanning and third-party verification services ensured only eligible consumers could access the marketplace. Order management supported both delivery (with configurable delivery zones and driver tracking) and in-store pickup workflows. For payments, we integrated alternative solutions including ACH transfers, PIN debit, and cashless ATM systems through Stripe's ACH capabilities. The admin dashboard provided comprehensive compliance reporting, sales analytics, and automated regulatory filing.

Client Testimonial

"Navigating cannabis compliance across multiple states while building a platform consumers actually enjoy using seemed impossible. PC Consulting made it happen. Their deep understanding of regulatory requirements combined with their eCommerce expertise gave us a marketplace that our dispensary partners trust and our customers love. The POS integrations alone saved our operators countless hours of manual inventory management. This platform is a competitive advantage."
